Unqualified Movie Reviews: Eagle vs. Shark

First of all, what’s the deal with comedies these days all using the same font for their titles and reviews? See: Juno, The Flight of the Conchords, and most recently, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. As I couldn’t find any common denominator, I’m assuming it’s the result of marketing agencies determining that using this font screams ‘Hip’, ‘Funny’, and ‘produced by a major studio but we want you to think we’re really indy’ at the same time. Anyways, on with the unqualified movie review.  I wanted to like this movie, for the sole reason that I’m a big FotC fan, but unfortunately it’s one of those cases where what you see in the trailers is pretty much it. Loren Horsley plays Lily — a quirky, down-on-her-luck, ex-Meaty Boy employee who falls for Jarrod (played by Jermaine Clement), an awkward uber-nerd of sorts. Picture Lily as a female Napoleon Dynamite, and Jarrod as a…regular Napoleon Dynamite, set it in New Zealand instead of Idaho, and that’s basically the gist of the movie. Seriously, the writer must have thought to himself “Lolz yeah Napoleon Dynamite was cool — if I do it with kiwi accents it’d be even better!” Throw in Jarrod training to fight a former high-school bully returning to town (what, no nunchucks?), character arcs that don’t go anywhere, and an anti-climactic ending if I ever saw one and you have your movie. I suppose there’s some moral story to be gleaned in there — how about ‘awkward love is awkward’? Nah, ‘never fight angry Samoans’ is probably better.  I’m giving it 2.5/5 raptor-holding-a-shotguns.

Keeping it up.

Within the past year or so, I’ve managed to buy five or six domain names. If you asked me why, I wouldn’t have a good answer other than it’s relatively cheap, and I suppose I get of kick out of knowing I’m staking my claim on the Internet. It’s also fun, for me at least, to try to come up with domain names that aren’t already taken. rom**m*****z.com is already taken by a Spanish web developer, and it looks like someone (other than me) is sitting on ry**m*****z.com. Weird.
